Jesus our Tabernacle

“And the Word became flesh and tabernacled (ἐσκήνωσεν) among (in) us, and we beheld for ourselves His Glory, glory as of the Only Begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth." (John 1:14)

John here makes an unmistakable reference to the tabernacle that the Israelites set up during their wandering in the desert. The Glory of God was associated with the Ark of the Covenant (1 Samuel 4:21.22) and wherever the Glory of God (in the cloud) would settle (Shekinah) they would set up the tabernacle. The glory of God was called the kabod in the Hebrew Old Testament (doxa in the Septuagint).

Later the Glory of God also filled the newly dedicated Solomon’s Temple (1 Kings 8:11-12) where God came to dwell (Shekinah). There, in the tabernacle/temple, the high priest would make atonement for the sins of the people. I think the Glory of God is what appeared on the mount of transfiguration (Mark 9:2-4), causing Peter to want to set up three tents-- same word used in John 1:14.

Jesus tells his disciples that by faith they will see the Glory of God (John 11:40). Paul tells us that sin causes us to fall short of the Glory of God (Romans 3:23). Paul also tells us that the Glory of God is what we hope for when we go to be with the Lord (Romans 5:2; Colossians 1:27; Titus 2:3) and what we will share in with God (Romans 8:17). I also think this is what John is referring to in 1 John 1:1-3, which speaks of our eternal fellowship with the Trinity.

Pray: "Thank you, Jesus, for being the new Tabernacle/Temple where the Glory of God dwells."
