“Christianity has not been tried and found wanting; it has been found difficult and left untried.” G. K. Chesterton
In John 6 Jesus gives a remarkable discourse comparing himself to the manna that God gave to Moses in the wilderness. This was after Jesus performed the miracle of the feeding of the 5,000, the people, still unsatisfied, were demanding food from heaven like the manna given to Moses. Imagine that. The people had just seen something that only God could do and they could not bring themselves to acknowledge that God was right there in their midst. Their mind was so cluttered by the things of this world; ignoring their very real spiritual poverty and instead wanting food that could only sustain them a short time. So, their response to Jesus’ exclamation “I am the bread of life (6:35)” was to grumble saying “this is a hard teaching (6:60)” and leave Him. Jesus said to the twelve “do you also wish to leave (6:67)” to which Simon Peter responded, “Lord to whom shall we go. You have the words of eternal life (6:68).”
We are so short-sighted. We are so busy trying to get ahead in life, trying to get the finer things in life, all of which will burn in the end with fire. The only thing worthy of our attention are the words of Jesus pointing to Himself. It is in Jesus that all our needs find fulfilment. We are created to know God and our joy can never be complete until that happens.
Pray: “God help us to prioritize our lives so that the spiritual takes precedence over the physical”
